What should I bring on my UTV Xcursion?

We recommend comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, a camera, spare tire, belt, and possibly a spare axle. Your UTV should be freshly serviced, inspected and have any worn parts replace prior to any event.

SXS Breakdown Policy

  1. Immediate Assistance:
Our team will make every effort to assist you with on-the-spot troubleshooting, minor repairs, or towing to a safe location along the trail.
  2. Limitations on Recovery:
If the breakdown cannot be resolved or your SXS cannot be safely towed or fixed, you will be responsible for arranging and covering the costs of professional recovery services.
  3. Recovery Fees:
Any recovery fees incurred beyond the assistance provided by our team (e.g., towing, trail recovery, or transport to a repair facility) are the sole responsibility of the vehicle owner/operator.
  4. Contacting Recovery Services:
If necessary, we can provide recommendations or help contact local recovery services, but the arrangements and payments are your responsibility.
  5. Responsibility Acknowledgment:
By participating in this event, you acknowledge and agree to this policy and accept responsibility for any additional costs associated with recovering your vehicle.

This policy is in place to ensure the safety of all participants and the continuity of the event. Please ensure your SXS is in good working condition before the event to minimize the risk of breakdowns.

OHV Regulations

Arizona

All OHV’s must have OHV decal to ride off-road in Arizona.

  • As of Jan. 1, 2025, one registered owner of the OHV is required to take the free course “OHV Decal: Safe & Ethical Riding in Arizona” in order to purchase a decal.
  • A resident OHV decal, which is available to Arizona residents and can be purchased through the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) offices statewide, at an authorized third-party MVD service provider or online at AZ MVD Now.
  • A nonresident OHV decal, which can only be purchased online through an Arizona Game and Fish Department portal account. The decal is not sold at AZGFD offices. Register for an account

If you are NOT street legal in your home State. How to Obtain a Temporary On-Highway Registration for a UTV as a Non-Resident.

A non-resident may obtain a 30-day temporary general use registration for a UTV that allows operation on all highways where the vehicle is not specifically prohibited by posted regulatory signs or local ordinance.

Eligibility Requirements

The applicant must be a non-resident of Arizona. The UTV must be titled and registered in the applicant’s home state and must meet the equipment requirements for on-highway operation. Proof of liability insurance meeting Arizona minimum requirements is required: $15,000 bodily injury per person, $30,000 bodily injury per accident, and $10,000 property damage.

Required Equipment

The following equipment must be present on the UTV and self-certified during the registration process: brakes that are adequate to control, stop, and hold the vehicle under normal conditions; headlights and taillights that are operational when the vehicle is operated between one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before sunrise; a muffler or noise dissipative device that prevents sound levels exceeding 96 dB when measured according to SAE J1287 standards; a USDA-approved spark arrestor in constant operation; at least one rearview mirror providing a clear view to the rear; and a horn capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 200 feet. Turn signals are not required.

Required Documents

The following documents are required: out-of-state title or current registration for the UTV; proof of liability insurance showing the required minimum coverage; valid photo identification; certificate of completion for the free OHV safety course; and a completed Form 96-0572, Off-Highway Vehicle Decal Application.

Step-by-Step Process

First, complete the free “OHV Decal: Safe & Ethical Riding in Arizona” safety course online through AZGFD.gov. The course consists of a brief video and quiz and takes approximately 20 minutes. Obtain and retain the certificate of completion.

Next, purchase a non-resident OHV decal for $25. This decal is required for all OHV operation in Arizona, whether off-highway or with temporary on-highway registration. The decal is valid for one year from the date of purchase and must be affixed to the upper left rear quarter panel of the UTV.

Then, verify that the UTV is equipped with all required equipment and gather all necessary documents. Complete Form 96-0572.

Submit Form 96-0572 to obtain the 30-day temporary general use registration. Applications may be submitted in person at any Arizona Motor Vehicle Division office or authorized third-party provider, or online through AZMVDNow.gov. On the application, certify that the vehicle meets all applicable equipment requirements for on-highway operation.

Upon approval, the applicant will receive a temporary registration card, a temporary registration plate or sticker and tab. Display the temporary registration plate or sticker on the rear of the UTV and affix the OHV decal in the upper left corner of the registration plate or as otherwise directed.

Fees

The fees required are a $15 fee for the 30-day temporary registration, a $25 fee for the non-resident OHV decal that is valid for one year, and a processing fee of $4 to $10.

Authorized Operation

A UTV with valid temporary on-highway registration may operate on forest roads, maintained dirt roads and gravel roads, state highways, county roads, and interstate highways. Operation is permitted on all highways except where specifically prohibited by posted regulatory signs.

When operating on any roadway, the vehicle must be operated in compliance with all applicable traffic laws, including maintaining a speed that does not impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation.

Additional Requirements

Riders under 18 years of age must wear DOT-approved helmets. Proof of registration and insurance must be carried while operating the vehicle. Operation must comply with all applicable traffic laws, including the requirement to use hand and arm signals for turning and stopping.

Limitations

One 30-day temporary registration may be obtained per UTV within any 12-month period. Additional temporary registrations cannot be obtained for the same vehicle within that 12-month period.

Penalties

Operating an off-highway vehicle without required registration or without required equipment is a class 2 misdemeanor, which may result in fines up to $250 and potential vehicle impoundment.

This process allows a non-resident to obtain a 30-day temporary registration that permits operation of a properly equipped UTV on all Arizona highways.
